The Alps

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

Sorry for the lack of communication - there’s obviously been a bit of a rejig to the site which I missed and last week I struggled to log in. As such, my latest post is a bit late in arriving. The Sedbergh Hills race and the Olympics now seem like ancient history.

Anyway, the Bingley Harriers backpack run to Ilkley was a raging success (if not a little messy!!) and I managed to get a couple of bike rides in that weekend as well. Again that seems a long time ago as I’ve just returned from a fab week in the Alps - Chamonix to be precise. What a place that is - if you’ve never been put it on your list of must see places.

I was out there on holiday but also to take in the North Face Ultra Trail Tour Du Mont Blanc race. After running it in 2007, this year I was there purely as a spectator and assistant to a few mates of mine that were running. It’s an absolutely spectacular event with 2400 runners taking on the 100 mile course (+30,000 ft of climb). This year, due mainly to the hot weather, only around 1250 runners actually completed the course in the alloted time (46 hours). I’m really pleased to say that my pals Colin, Rob, Johnny and Kevin all made it to the finish - well done guys you can wear the jacket with pride. Unfortunately, one of my other buddies Ross failed this year after a good run last year - I think he was probably trying a bit too hard early on and paid the price in the heat.

Britain had a fantastic victory with Lizzie Hawker winning the womens race in a fantastic time of 25 hours 20 mins - big respect!!!

Managed to get a couple of good runs in whilst I was there - What a place the alps are - hundreds of miles of trails all with breathtaking scenery and  massive climbs and descents - a real runners / bikers paradise. I was out last Thursday morning early - caught the cable car half way up Mont Blanc then ran along the Grand North Balcon - saw my first Marmott!! - before returning to Chamonix via the Montenvers trail - all this before breakfast - top banana!!

Now it’s back to reality - well almost as it’s the mighty Ben Nevis race this Saturday. Just time to unpack and rinse through my undies before I’m off again on a trip oop north.

The Ben is a real hard race - 1 mile flat - 4 miles climb - 4 miles descent - 1 mile flat - simple eh? I can tell you that no 10 mile run feels like the Ben race - nor does any 10 mile run make you walk in such a bizzare way for the next 2 days. Afetr my semi restful holiday I’ll be interested to see how I go this weekend - one thing’s for sure the party in Fort Bill on Saturday night will be a gud un!!

Down But Not Out….

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Had a rest on Wednesday then went out with the fast boys from the Bingley Harriers on Thursday night who were up for a session.

Managed 40 mins then had to let them go - the pace was just too hot for me. So me and another chap trotted back at our own pace.

I seem to be really struggling on the hills at the minute and don’t know why. I’m wondering if it’s just  that the season is starting to catch up with me a little. I’m at the point where I don’t know if I need to train harder or have a few weeks off. Trouble is I’ve got that many races planned that I can’t fit in a rest period so I guess it’ll have to be the harder training option!!!

After the humiliation of being dropped on Thursday night I went out Friday for a quick 35 mins up the local hill and felt reasonable - song of the session - Wig Wam Bam by The Sweet - now don’t laugh (well ok you can if you like) but if you manage to ignore the cheesy lyrics and can pretend you never did the ridiculous dance it’s actually a cracking song.

Saturday I eventually managed to crack out the road bike - did 20 miles at 17.5 mph average which is about my usual pace - Hannah will probably chuckle at this and call me chicken legs but I don’t think it’s that bad for an occasional cyclist on the hills riding solo. I enjoyed the ride and decided I need to do more of this to compliment my running and in prep for the 3 Peaks Cyclo Cross in September.

Now sat here considering going up to do Sedbergh Hills Fell race tomorrow - 14 miles 6000 ft - It’s either that or a walk round Kettlewell Scarecrow festival…….I’ll let you know if you tune in tomorrow.

Fell running schedule …

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Well I guess you can tell it’s summer as the rain is slightly warmer!!!

Did an 1 hour 15 on the hills Saturday and felt quite good if not a little damp. The new pod phones (standard ipod) aren’t as good as my old Sonys - they were blowing out in the wind!!) Tune of the session - Whole Lotta Rosie - AC/DC - I would say the best heavy rock song ever written….

Sunday - went to Dalby Forest with my son - he’s not ridden a trail centre yet so we set off on the blue route but quickly realised this was too tame so split off on the red route. He loved every meter of it and can’t wait to get back to tackle some more. If you like riding MTBs and have never been to Dalby, do yourself a favour and take a trip east - you will not be dissappointed.

Monday - just a couple of walks out with the dog but no running - it’s amazing how much more you see when you walk.

Tuesday - a quick hour on the hills tonight and guess what, it rained - lots. Looked like a drowned rat when I got back but at least it was warm rain. iPod song of the session - Ramble On - Led Zeppelin.

Looking ahead - here’s what’s coming up :-

early Sept - Ben Nevis Fell Race

late Sept - 3 Peaks Cyclo Cross (this is going to hurt this year as I’ve hardly touched the bike…)

early Oct - Langdale Fell race

late Oct - OMM (Original Mountain Marathon) 2 day orienteering race carrying full kit - they’ve just announced the location as Borrowdale in the Lake district - NICE!!

Soon be Christmas……………

What is your week like after a fell race?

Monday, August 11th, 2008

Here’s how my week after a big lakes race looks (I’d like to know what the top lads do in comparison) :-

Sunday was very much a recovery day from the race and the beer!! Early to bed Sunday night ready for the week ahead.

Monday - walk with the dog first thing (she’s only a pup so no running yet but as she’s a border collie she’ll be helping my fittness regime next year). Then a very steady 40 mins trot home from work and an even steadier cycle back with my son to rescue the car.

Tuesday - 50 min run afetr work - not feeling too bad on the flat and downs but no steam on the hills. My iPod phones finally conked out tonight - I guess they just got fed up of being filled with sweat and rain….

Wednesday - rest

Thursday - felt OK so joined the lads at the club for a blast. I hung on with the fast boys for an hour of fast(ish) hills but then my wheels came off and the weekend really started to show its teeth. I had to let them go and trot the last couple of miles back at my pace.

Friday - quick spin out on the MTB with my son - his technical skills are really coming on well now and he’s starting to appreciate that there’s more to MTB riding than just blasting downhill.

Think I’ll do a couple of hours run tomorrow then we’re off to Dalby Forrest on Sunday to let my son have his first taste of a trail centre - he’ll love it!!

Borrowdale Fell Race

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Just returned from the lakes and competing in the Borrowdale Fell Race.

It was a British and English championship counter so it was even busier than usual this year with around 460 starters. Despite each athlete needing prior experience before they could enter the race, it still filled to its limit of 500 within a couple of days of the entries opening in May. There’s a real resurgence in popularity for fell running at the minute which I personally think is great for the sport.

What we need now is to somehow get more junior runners to take to the fells rather than the road or track.

Anyway, after last week’s light training, I felt pretty good on the start line - I was just hoping the feeling would last. The start is quite quick as it’s flat for the first mile or so but then it kicks up sharply for the climb up Bessy Boot (yes that really is its name). After that it’s a long undulating boggy / rocky run of around 5 miles across to Esk Hause and Scafell. The rocks toward the summit of Scafell were slippy as hell and with the fog down, the highest place in England was once again a pretty grim place to be. The scree decent off Scafell is pretty exiting and then it’s a technical run across the corridor route to Sty Head at the foot of Great Gable. The climb up Gable is a real slog with a very cheeky false summit to raise then dash your hopes. From the summit it’s a very tricky navigation exercise to reach Honister pass and lots of folk get lost (including Rob Jebb who was leading the race until this point and eventually finished 15th after going the wrong way!!!). I managed to stay on track and toughed out the last climb up Dale Head before plunging down to the finish chasing and being chased by some of my Bingley Harriers club mates.

I finished in around 3 hours 41 mins (winning time was well under 3 hours!!) and was reasonably pleased as I’d felt pretty good all the way around.

After a quick wash in the river we partied the night away first around the BBQ, then in the pub, then the beer tent (to steel band music) and finally at a local’s house party. Crawled into the tent at 3.05am.

Think I’ll have a day off today!!

Finally, my mate Steve has started the coast to coast run today which he’s aiming to do in 3 days - I’ll report on progress soon….

29/7/08 Borrowdale Fell Race Beckons

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

Well it’s Borrowdale Fell race on Saturday - one of the toughest races in the fell running calendar.

I’ve done it before in 05 and can remember quite a bit of it but unforunately, it’s always the bits that you can’t remember that are the worst.

I’ve been feeling pretty rubbish lately and struggling to get that floaty feeling when I’m out training. Went out for an hour on the bike Saturday - very steady with my son - then 30 mins run on Monday evening and a harder 1 hour run tonight. The weather was very warm which doesn’t suit me but I actually felt OK today. I’ll be resting up now to Saturday with probably a short spin on the bike tomorrow and a steady jog on Thursday.

There’s a big shin-dig after the race on Saturday and a few of us are camping so it should be a hoot. At least the thought of cold beer and live music should help to pull me round the 17 mile course and up and down Bessy Boot, Scafell, Great Gable and Dale Head.

13/7/08 Wheely Wet

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Did 3 hours on the mountain bike (Marin Mount Vision) this morning.

It’s been a while since I’ve ridden my full susser and I really didn’t feel very ‘trail sharp’.

Still it was nice to get out with my old cycling pals for a muddy blast round the local trails. Thankfully one of them had been to a party last night and had too many cocktails so he was rough when he picked me up - this slowed him up and stopped them giving me a whipping up the first long climb (Alter Lane out of Bingley).

I really like to combine cycling with my running as I beleive it helps to develop my CV whilst being easier on the body (assuming I manage to stay on of course).

My mate Jamie completed the Wasdale fell race yesterday in 5 hours and 5 mins - he was dead chuffed - that’s one tough race!

12/7/08 - running on the moors - Is this Summer?

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Got the iPod on and went for a nice run out over the moors this morning - 1hour 15 mins - I guess around 9 miles. Lots of hill climbs and wet techy single track. The weather was good is this summer?

Saw an old mate of mine who I used to ride motorbikes with - he was playing golf with 3 other very serious Pringle wearing chappies - he used to be such a loon on the bikes now he’s chasing a little white ball around a field - what is the world coming to??? Think I’ll stick to the running and biking for now.

Finished the run with 10 minutes hard and felt all went OK.

iPod track of the session =  Nickleback - Rockstar

What’s Next??

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Need to get some miles in this weekend to burn off all the brithday cake.

It’s Wasdale Fell race tomorrow - I’m not doing it but my OMM partner Jamie is. It’s one of the toughest races in the UK - at over 20 miles and with around 7500 ft of climb over many of the Lakes’ highest peaks it’s a real beast. I did it last in 2006 but decided to skip it this year as I want to make sure I’m fully recovered after the yacht race.

My next race will be Borrowdale fell race in August - another long (17 miles) lakes race that takes in Scafell, Great Gable and Dale Head. It’s a tough one but there’s a big party in the evening so that should keep us going till the end.

Then it’s the 3 Peaks cyclo cross in September (better try and get a few bike miles in me thinks!!) followed by the OMM in October.

By the way - anyone watch Superstars? - I remember watching that when I was a kid - Brian Jacks (remember him??) what a hero!!

Birthday Boy

Monday, July 14th, 2008

Birthday today - 39 (I’m going to start taking them off from now on!!)

Did an orienteering event on Baildon Moor.

These are great fun low key events run by Airenteers. You pay 50p, get a map and a dibber (an electronic punch that records your time) and off you go.

I did it with my 8 year old son which made it great fun even though the weather was pretty grim.

If you’ve never tried one of these you should as it’s amazing how hard it can be to find a brightly coloured checkpoint on a moor that you know well.

Although it was only 3.7k it took us around 53 mins (& we missed CP 1 as I made a schoolboy error thinking that was where we started from - got into big trouble from my son for doing this).

Hope I don’t make the same mistake in October when I do the OMM.
