Hi
2 months ago I returned to running following a 6 month enforced break due to PF. It seemingly arrived from nowhere and almost disappeared as quickly. I had completed 2 marathons last autumn and actually reduced my mileage for a couple of months when PF became evident. Only thing different I did was to run in trail shoes...partly on the road through all the ice and snow in the winter. I too trawled the websites looking for answers. The only consistent which really helped in the end was LOADS of sustained stretching..I mean holding the foot stretched against a wall for 45-60 seconds at least 8 times a day...together with massaging and REALLY important to stretch BEFORE AGETTING OUT OF BED IN THE MORNING. I maintained fitness as best I could in the gym and have in the last 5 weeks completed 3 10k road races in reasonable times and 2 cross country events. So there is hope.....Lets hope I don't eat my words as I've just entered the Edinburgh Marathon!! Ah yes, went back to supportive but cushioned shoes which are more flexible in the forefoot. (but not beddroom slippers!)...For added info, I am a 47yr old female who's been running for 30 years..Thanks

If I was to tell you that your problem was your training volume and nothing else that has gotten you into this problem, I would probably be in another long line of 'experts', but I also feel with all modesty that I would be right. Of course you had trained and run further and harder in the past and not developed this problem. But that assumes that all the variables in training and recovery, progression and timing were all the same and that your nutrition and body was of the same age....
PF is a problem of overload through tissues in the foot. All the other theories on treatment will help you recover but your body will heal itself in time! Alas.

You have the same foot type that you had in the past, so why does it now need an orthotic? Training overload. Getting back to basics is important.

Recover well, and maybe see you...out there!

Hi Pleased to say you have not sent me to sleep. I have been suffering with the same for the past year. I am a walker and have only done a very small amount of running and that was a few years ago and at the time I invested in a good pair of running shoes, its a shame I did not do the same for the walking. I agree that I think my case has been bought on by not having supportive foot wear whilst walking. I have now a good pair of walking boots and all my foot wear is now also very supportive. I have been to see a specialist at the hospital and have had insoles made esecially for me to support my arches. It has improved considerably but has not gone away completely. I need to go back to the specialist to possibly adjust the insoles or the other option is to have a steriod injection to calm any last inflamation, I think I would prefer the first option. I have spoken to other sufferers and feel I am quite lucky as I am improving and they have not been so lucky. I hope that you continue to improve and get back to doing what you enjoy as you dont realise until you have this problem just how painful and disabilating it is. I am 48 and although no spring chicken I am a long way from sitting with my feet up and have still lots things on my to do list. ,

Congratulations Andy! Fantastic achievement. I can feel a book coming on: Mud, sweat and tears-memoirs of an extreme athlete. Jeremy Clarkson's done very well out of compiling his newspaper articles and this(all your blogs) would be a perfect inspirational toilet reading for the Harriers gents ! A

Hi, does anyone have any experience of the airsports watch???Im wondering if they are any good as my husband has just bought me one. It says on the package they help with levelling out the bodies negative irons and promote healthy healing. Im just wondering if this is all talk??Thanks.

Nice blog Jamie. I'm looking forward to the combo of running and tech.

You may have already chosen an online logging system, but if not, check out www.fetcheveryone.com . My only connection is as a user and it's been an inspiring online ecosystem which has me challenging myself in ways I couldn't have imagined two years ago.

I bought this shoe yesterday for a few reasons. One, it's beautiful. I got the dark gray and hot pink. Two, it was so light and comfortable, with spacious toe room, and three, the most important for me, was it was extremely cushioned yet snug in heel.

I don't 'trail' run, but this shoe felt better than any other running shoe I tried on yesterday, which was about 15.

I never fail to be impressed by your stamina and sheer determination Andy. What a tremendous read! I dont run, I walk and climb and I've tackled these 3 girls before. I cannot however imagine running them once, nevermind 3 times !
There's a book in here somewhere, i'm sure.

Andy
You are judging my i pod by the contents of your's
It was not Bros but, The Boss I was flying along to - Born to Run

As you know I have been running for over 40 years and the i pod is one of the best pieces of running kit I have ever bought. I know I fought against it for a long time but thanks Andy for introducing me to the concept of running to music - Now child of the seventies get rid of your Bay City Roller collection and get some proper music.
