PTL 2012
September 7th, 2012 by Andy NicollStill not really sure how but we did it!
I’ve never before had 25 degrees of sunshine and knee deep snow in the same race – there again we did race through three countries, covered 186 miles and climbed the equivalent of 3 Everests in 5 days.
It was without question the hardest thing I’ve ever done – by some margin. I will not be doing it again in a hurry but it has left me with some unforgettable memories, some new friendsĀ and some sore feet!
Now for a rest……

hey andy, stumbled upon your page while researching a problem ive been facing for awhile now and taking a shot that you may be able to offer some advice … i’m a filmmaker and often need to spend all day on my feet … not running really but just standing, walking, occasionally sprinting from one location to the next. and by mid-day my feet feel like they will fall apart. after some research i bought myself a pair of puma faas 500 and another of nike zoom structure 14+ … and i use them both alternating each other. the problem i’m facing is that in the nikes my right heel and calf start aching by mid-day and in the pumas my back starts giving way. (i also have an acute back problem from back in the day). i know this may be a shot in the dark but do you think you could offer some advice / tips / suggestions on what may be the correct shoes for me? minimalist shoes, maybe? been reading up on those too, and half thought of picking up a pair of free runs. confused! please help. thanks.

Hi Nishant – thanks for the post but I’m really not sure I can offer much advice.
To be honest I think I’d have more trouble with my feet if I tried to do what you’re doing rather than moving on them all day. ‘Bare foot’ shoes seem to be all the rage at the moment but personally I’m not convinced by the hype – that said I’ve never tried them so maybe they are the answer to all our problems
Currently my favourite shoes are Adidas Kanadia – if I have to spend all day in a single shoe these are the ones I’d reach for.
The only other thing I would suggest is maybe looking at more of an approach shoe than a running shoe such as those made by Garmont, La Sportiva, Scarpa etc.
Hope this helps a bit and good luck!
Andy

Hi Nishant – you’re one step ahead of us there – we are still on Kanadia TR4 here – not seen the 5th version until you sent the link. It looks good but I can’t recommend it having never tried it. The ones I’ve been using are Kanadia TR4 – you can probably get them at a better price. Andy

hey andy, thanks for your advice. i couldnt find the tr 4s anywhere and by the time i thought to order the 5s with the intention of returning them if i didnt like them, they were sold out hahhaha. but i did stumble across an asics that i quite liked … the gel enduro 7. havent bought them yet, thought i’d do a bit of research before shelling out the cash, having bought several shoes only to give them away coz i cant wear them more than a couple of times! what do you think of the gel enduros?

Sorry Nishant – just seen this.
I can’t comment on the Gel enduro 7 as I’ve never tried them but Asics certainly know how to make a good shoe – whether it works for you or not though is all down to your foot – not the price or the brand.
Good luck!
Andy
