Gold & Bronze for Bingley Harriers…..
August 8th, 2012 by Andy NicollYesterday myself and 97 other Bingley Harriers rose at 4am for a coach trip to the Olympic Triathlon which took place in Hyde Park London – and what a fantastic day we had!
Not only was the event a true sporting spectacle, not only did we sample the olympic atmosphere, not only was the weather kind, not only did we have an English winner and not only did I get a two for the price of one deal at Starbucks! The real treat for us was that the winner and the bronze medallist were both Bingley Harriers.
I am of course talking about the now legendary Brownlee brothers, the Yorkshire born and bred, unassuming, stars of the phone book who yesterday took on the world in their home olympics and reigned supreme.
Only Javier Gomez of Spain could stick with our lads over the 1500 meter swim, 42km bike ride and 10k run all of which they knocked off in about an hour and three quarters!
The atmosphere at the event was truly amazing with an estimated 250,000 people in and around the park cheering on our tri-sport heros.
What an honour it is to be part of the same club as Ali and Jonny. Their performances in training, racing and interviews are a real inspiration to our junior members – not only are they unfeasably good at what they do they also manage to keep their feet on the ground, retain some good old Yorkshire charm and remain a thoroughly decent pair of chaps!
Hooray for the Brownlees – long may your reign continue!
