gym before work … great wake up call

September 19th, 2008 by James

Just a quick question to throw out there …

I have recently just joined an outside gym ( as the gym i use in my buiding has run its course). This out side gym is an independant gym and hence a bit smaller than the larger chains but is considerably cheaper.

I was wondering how much everyone pays for gym membership? I enquired at a large chain earlier this week and they quoted me £50 a month and a £30-£50 joining fee. Surely this is EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE???

The one i joind was £85 for 3 months which works out about £28 a month which i think is very reasonable. Just interested how much these gyms can charge up to.

Anyway, was there at 7.00am this morning, me and one other person. Huge deadlifts … loved it.

Hello. I pay £35 a month for my gym. It’s a small independent one, nothing fancy - no pool, saunas or anything like that - but friendly and ‘normal’ - I like it.

    Hi Clare,

£35 a month seems a good price as well. Where abouts is it because it seems there is a definite jump in price between london and the rest of england!

The gym i am in now hasn’t got a pool either but it does have 1 sauna in the changing rooms. To be honest when i join a gym with a pool i will go a couple of times in the beginning but after that i never have time because it adds on at least half and hour to your gym session.

I’m paying £50 a month, but it’s a gym in London and is also a membership which means I can use whichever gym in the chain I want to - which is quite handy, especially as it is a large chain with clubs all over the place. I do want to use the pool but I am wondering how often I will actually use it!!

Hey James, I am about to face my first winter as a novice runner - so figured the only way to ensure a constant level of fitness/training was to join a gym & run road & trail when the weather would allow.

I’m fortunate enough to have a local borough council - Crawley, West Sussex - that actively promotes financially accessible fitness. Most of the big High Schools have reasonable gym facilities, which the public can use for £20 per month! Nothing fancy, but if you need to get the job done when its hammering rain & 10 below, its better than nothing!

As far as london prices go i think £50 seems to be quite reasonable. I have read that in some places they charge up to £100 almost which i think is absolutely ridiculous!

I do have to add though that the recent gym i enquired at where they wanted to charge me up to £50 a month did offer you any classes they had on free of charge which i think is a great offer but only if you will actually use them. I can imagine that i would sign up on that basis and go to the classes for about a month and then stop and i would be stuck into a contract!

I haven’t ever realised that the local schools etc might allow you to use their facilities at a price. I remember when i was at uni their gym wasn’t bad at all and had all the major euipment in that you would want and it was £30 per year … happy times!

I think there are 2 things to keep in mind James.

The gov’t has got health targets its trying to achieve in terms of coronary heart disease/diabetes/stroke & obesity, so is investing heavily in getting local PCTs & councils to support subsidised fitness for local people, based on the premise that prevention is better than cure. Yes, like thats news to anyone!!

Secondly, the market place for fitness opps is expanding & highly competative, even in large urban conurbations where the cost of living is higher.

To wit, its worth checking out what your local borough council is doing in terms of its current fitness schemes; which could range from use of schools, colleges & Unis; through to subsidized membership to track, pool & gym in the private sector.

Btw, my membership at the local school gym includes pilates & basic jump & burn aerobic sessions, so if I’m sufficiently motivated to don the neon lycra, I might give one or two a go !! :)
